5 Famous Golf Courses In Algarve You Can’t Miss
There are many great golf courses in Algarve that stand out from the rest of the pack. Here are five of the best ones to see. They contain some unique points and are even supported by many prominent designers, making them entertaining enough for all players to have fun on.
- Monte Rei North
- San Lorenzo
- Oceanico Old Course
- Quinta do Lago South Course
- Quinta da Ria
Monte Rei North
The North course at the Monte Rei resort is right along the coast and has an amazing view of the mountains. This course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and features many elevated tees and more than enough downhill lies to create a challenge for all players. The course especially has a strong series of water and sand spaces that will come into play quite often and should be watched for carefully.
San Lorenzo
The San Lorenzo course is a famous place that has narrow fairways and umbrella pines all around. Located not too far from the Ria Formosa bird sanctuary, this course was designed by Joe Lee and has a semi-island green on the last hole as well as water all around the left part. The fifth hole is especially famous for having one of the most dramatic beach backdrops any golfer will ever see.
Oceanico Old Course
The Oceanico resort has many courses but the Old Course is the best one to see. This course features a number of pine trees all around and takes advantage of the many natural contours that make up the course’s overall design. The middle part of the course is popular for being the ultimate test of the golfer’s fairway accuracy as it features plenty of undulating spaces and some narrow surfaces to aim for.
Quinta do Lago South Course
The South Course at the Quinta do Lago has become a popular course in Algarve thanks to how it has hosted the Portuguese Open several times. The bunkers are large and deep, thus adding to the challenge. The fairways are rather easy to hit but they come with undulating features all around to make them all the more challenging.
Quinta da Ria
The last course to see is the Quita da Ria course. It is a course that is relatively new and features a wavy surface and some of the fastest greens around. The greens are rather surprising to many golfers as they have some varied greens that are challenging and have plenty of undulations that will surprise even the most seasoned golfer. The course’s greens are also fast and require the golfer to have control over each shot.
